Just trying out a slightly different style to the one I've been doing over the last while. A little more realistic I suppose.

Line work for a new image I'm working on.

Wednesday, October 7, 2009

It's obviously been quite a while since I last updated this. I've been a busy man this last while and have made some decent steps towards becoming a better illustrator and designer.
Unfortunately (or maybe fortunately) I've also been very busy with other new additions to my life that I've had to make time for, these being a new girlfriend and a new band I'm forming.
As a result I've spent no where near as much time on the artistic side of things as I'd like to have done but I'm getting there.

It's becoming very apparent that in order for me
to achieve my goal of becoming a professional illustrator I'm going
to have to make sacrifices and changes to my life which allow me to have a greater amounts of time to work on my art.
I'm going to see how well I stick to these sacrifices and changes over the next few months and then talk about them in a few months time on here.

Anyway, enough about all that. Here's a few of the things I've worked on over the last while with a brief description for each one.

This is a T Shirt design I was asked to do
by a Dublin based Pop-Punk band called
The Shower Scene.
This one is a personal piece.

This is the E.P. cover for a Dublin based metal band
called Red Enemy. They wanted a parody on the
Red Bull can so this is the end result for the cover.

Finished this one up the other day.
No more drawing trees without leaves for a while please.

Here's a close up of current work in progress:

It's always cool to learn something when working on a new piece.
Unfortunately the main thing I've learned so far while doing this is that I find drawing and inking trees with no leafs to be boring as hell and deceptively time consuming.

Well this last week has been pretty brilliant overall.

I'm just going to stick to talking about the art side of things for now though. Ove the last two weeks I've had two different bands ask me to design their next EPs. I'm currently waiting to hear back from the both of them to see if the rough sketches and ideas I've sent them are what they had in mind. Whatever happens, it's another step forward in the goal to doing this shit full time and being able to quit the 9 to 5 deskjob that will surely drive me to the edge of going on a killing spree some day.

I've also done this personal piece over whatever spare time i've had over the last few days. It got to the stage where I was kind of just fussing around with it so I've just called it finished for now.

Anyway, to wrap it up, life is good right now. Long may it continue that way.

So I've been back drawing and painting for about a year and a half now and I've been taking it more seriously than I ever have. The problem is, for me to actually hope to make a living from art I've had to start pushing myself even more.

My goal right now is to become an illustrator/designer. That'll entail doing editorial pieces for newspapers and magazine, posters and CD covers for bands...that kind of thing.

For this to happen and from doing my research two things have become apparent; I need to produce work within a quicker time frame and I need to develop a 'style' which people would assosiate me with.

This is the most recent imagine I've produced with this new technique and style I've been working on. I really like the way it came out but there's plenty of things I learned from it that I'll do differently on the next one.

Anyway, that's a long enough post for my first post so I'll leave it at that for now.
